What're the differences between the lead screw and ball screw?

Lead Screw and Ball Screw are both types of screws used to convert rotational motion into linear motion, Lead Screws are generally used where large loads or high speed is not required while Ball Screws are used in applications where high speed and/or accuracy is necessary.


Lead Screws are also less expensive than Ball ScrewsLead Screws can be used in a wide variety of applications including clocks, toys, and door latches while Ball Screws are mostly used in applications that need high precision such CNC machines. 


Lead Screw is a type of screw often used as a linear actuator. The defining characteristic of a Lead Screw is that it is perfectly tuned to convert one full rotation of the shaft into a precise linear displacement. Because Lead Screws are manufactured to such tight tolerances, they can be used without the need for any form of Nut engagement mechanism. This greatly reduces the overall cost and complexity of the Lead Screw assembly. Lead Screws are also much easier to manufacture than Ball Screws, making them the preferred choice for applications where price is a major consideration.


A Ball Screw is also a type of linear actuator but with one key difference: Rather than using friction to generate thrust like a Lead Screw, balls are used instead. These balls roll along the threads of the Ball Screw as it rotates, transferring power more efficiently and with much lower levels of friction than a Lead Screw. The main advantage of this design is that it allows for much higher speeds and accelerations than a leadscrew-based system while still maintaining high levels of accuracy. However, this efficiency comes at a price: Ball Screws are much more expensive to manufacture than Lead Screws, making them the preferred choice only for applications where the highest possible performance is required.
